Which Tortoise is Right for You? The Best Beginner Species in the UK

So, You Want a Tortoise?

Deciding to bring a tortoise into your life is a 50+ year commitment. Unlike a goldfish, this is a pet that might outlive you! With so many species available, picking the right one is crucial for both your happiness and the animal's welfare.

In the UK, our damp, cool climate limits which species thrive outdoors. While those giant tortoises look cute as babies, they turn into furniture-destroying bulldozers very quickly. Here is our guide to the best beginner tortoises for UK keepers.

The "Mediterranean Three" (The Gold Standard)

If you are a first-time keeper, we almost always recommend one of these three. They stay a manageable size (15-25cm), hibernate naturally, and can live outdoors for much of the summer.

1. Hermann’s Tortoise (Testudo hermanni)

The classic pet tortoise. Friendly, active, and perfectly suited to UK gardens in the summer.

  • Size: Small to Medium (15-20cm)
  • Personality: Very inquisitive and active.
  • Paperwork: Annex A (Requires Article 10 Certificate).

2. Horsfield’s / Russian Tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii)

Small, round, and full of attitude! These are fantastic diggers and hardy little tanks. They are arguably the toughest of the bunch.

  • Size: Small (13-20cm)
  • Personality: Fearless climbers and diggers.
  • Paperwork: Annex B (No Article 10 needed).

3. Spur-thighed Tortoise (Testudo graeca)

Very similar care to the Hermann's but with a slightly different look. A wonderful, long-lived companion.

  • Size: Medium (20-25cm)
  • Personality: Generally calm and gentle.
  • Paperwork: Annex A (Requires Article 10 Certificate).

The "Giants" (Proceed with Caution!)

We often see cute baby Sulcata and Leopard tortoises for sale. They look tiny now, but you must know what you are signing up for.

Warning: These species do NOT hibernate. This means you need a large, heated indoor setup (often an entire room or shed) for 6-8 months of the year. They grow huge (up to 70cm+ for Sulcatas) and are incredibly strong. We only recommend these for experienced keepers with plenty of space and budget.

Conclusion

For most UK families, a Hermann's or Horsfield's tortoise is the perfect choice. They are manageable, legal, and fit well into our climate.
