Hermann’s vs. Horsfield: Which Tortoise is Right for You?

Hermann’s vs. Horsfield: Which Tortoise is Right for You?

If you are looking to buy your first tortoise in the UK, you have almost certainly narrowed it down to two choices: the Hermann’s (Testudo hermanni) or the Horsfield (Testudo horsfieldii).

While they look similar, they have distinct personalities and very different legal requirements. Choosing the wrong one can lead to unexpected vet bills or accidental non-compliance with trading laws.

1. The Hermann’s Tortoise (The Friendly Choice)

Hermann’s are widely considered the best all-rounder for UK keepers. They are active, generally friendly, and withstand our climate reasonably well.

  • Personality: Often outgoing and less shy than other species.
  • The Legal Bit (Crucial): Hermann’s are an Annex A species. This means by law, they must be sold with a Transaction Article 10 Certificate (a yellow paper from DEFRA). If a seller offers you a Hermann’s without this certificate, walk away. It is illegal to sell one without it.

2. The Horsfield / Russian Tortoise (The Digger)

Horsfields are smaller, rounder, and have bags of attitude. They are hardy little tanks, but they have one obsession: digging.

  • Behaviour: They are rampant climbers and diggers. Your enclosure boundaries must be deeper and stronger than you think!
  • Humidity Warning: They originate from arid, sandy regions. They are more susceptible to "Shell Rot" in damp UK conditions than Hermann’s, so they need a drier setup.
  • Paperwork: Horsfields are Annex B. They typically do not require an Article 10 Certificate to be sold. You just need a receipt and proof of legal acquisition. This makes them easier to buy and sell, but harder to trace.

The Verdict?

Choose a Hermann’s if: You want a "classic" pet tortoise that is generally friendly and you are happy to handle the CITES paperwork.

Choose a Horsfield if: You want a smaller tortoise with a huge personality, and you have a very secure, dry setup that can withstand heavy digging.
