The Egyptian Tortoise (Testudo kleinmanni) is a jewel of the reptile world. Adults rarely exceed 10-12cm. They are Critically Endangered and strictly CITES Annex A.
1. The "Micro-Climate"
Coming from coastal Libya and Egypt, they require a very specific balance of heat and airflow.
- Intolerance to Damp: They are extremely susceptible to respiratory infections in the UK. A well-ventilated indoor table in a warm room is safer than outdoor keeping in the UK.
- Substrate: Dry sand/soil mix.
2. Behaviour: Estivation
They do not hibernate. In the wild, they "estivate" (go dormant) during the hottest summer months. In captivity, they are generally active year-round if temps are regulated (Basking 32°C, Ambient 24°C).
3. Conservation Responsibility
If you keep this species, you are a custodian of a vanishing animal. Breeding should be the goal. Always join a recognised group like the British Chelonia Group for support.
