The Spur-Thighed Tortoise (Testudo graeca) is a classic Mediterranean species. While similar to the Hermann's, they are less tolerant of the damp British climate and require specific care to prevent respiratory issues.
1. The "Damp" Danger
This species is prone to "Runny Nose Syndrome" (RNS) if kept on cold, wet grass. Drainage is key.
- Outdoor Setup: Ensure their enclosure is on a slope or use a gravel base covered in topsoil to ensure rainwater drains away quickly.
- The Greenhouse: Essential for this species in the UK. They need a bone-dry, heated area to retreat to immediately when it rains.
2. Hatchling Care
While adults need dry conditions, hatchlings are prone to dehydration. Raising them in a "closed chamber" method (high humidity, 70%+) for the first year results in smoother shell growth and prevents pyramiding. Mist their enclosure lightly every morning.
3. Diet & Calcium
Like the Hermann's, they are strict weed-eaters. Cuttlefish bone should always be available for them to nibble on for extra calcium and beak trimming.
4. Legal Status
Warning: This is a CITES Annex A species. It is illegal to buy or sell a Spur-Thighed tortoise in the UK without a valid Article 10 Exemption Certificate. Always check the paperwork.
