The Marginated Tortoise (Testudo marginata) is the largest of the European species. Adults develop a spectacular flared "skirt" on their rear shell, making them one of the most visually striking tortoises.
1. Space Requirements
Growing up to 14 inches (35cm), adults require significantly more room than a Hermann's.
- Enclosure Size: A minimum of 3m x 3m for a single adult. They are active roamers.
- Heat Absorption: Their shells are very dark (melanistic). This allows them to absorb heat quickly on cooler UK mornings, meaning they are often active earlier in the day than other species.
2. Diet & Shell Growth
To ensure their flared skirt grows correctly, calcium is critical. A deficiency during their rapid growth phase (years 3-7) can lead to a deformed, flat skirt.
- Weeds: Mallow, Plantain, and Dandelion are favourites.
- Calcium: Use Limestone Flour daily.
3. Hibernation
They hibernate well in the UK. Ensure they are fasted for 4 weeks prior to hibernation to empty their gut, preventing food from rotting inside them during winter.
