Warning: This species requires specialist facilities. The Sulcata (Centrochelys sulcata) starts as a tiny, cute hatchling but grows into a 60kg+ bulldozer that does not hibernate.

1. The Reality of Size

Within 5 years, a Sulcata can exceed 30cm. By 15 years, they can weigh 50kg.

  • Housing: An adult requires a heated stable or insulated shed (min 10ft x 10ft) with a connected reinforced outdoor paddock.
  • Destruction: They will tunnel under foundations and push through standard garden fences. Reinforcement is mandatory.

2. Winter Heating Costs

Keeping a large shed at 26°C when it is -5°C outside in January is expensive. Potential owners must factor in monthly electricity bills of £50-£100+ for heating alone.

3. Diet

They are voracious grazers. They act like cows. You need access to bales of hay. Do not feed fruit—the sugar disrupts their gut flora causing blooms of parasites.
