The Leopard Tortoise (Stigmochelys pardalis) is a stunning African species. They are peaceful grazers but present a specific challenge for UK keepers: they get big, and they do not hibernate.
1. Indoor Housing (Winter)
Because they are active year-round, you cannot keep an adult in a small vivarium. You need:
- A Heated Room/Shed: Minimum 8ft x 4ft floor space. Ambient temp must be 22°C+ day and night.
- Lighting: High-intensity Mercury Vapor Bulbs (MVB) work well to provide both heat and UV for this species.
2. Diet: The Grass Lover
Unlike Mediterranean tortoises, Leopards are designed to digest dry grasses. A diet of just leafy veg will cause "runny" stools and health issues.
- 70% Grass/Hay: Timothy Hay, Meadow Hay, and dried Readigrass should be available 24/7.
- 30% Weeds: Supplement with fresh weeds.
3. Hydration
Despite being an African species, they drink copious amounts of water. A large, shallow water bowl (big enough for them to sit in) is mandatory. Change it daily as they will defecate in it.
