The Red-Footed Tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius) hails from the rainforest floor. Their care requirements are the exact opposite of desert species.

1. Environment: Low Light & Damp

They dislike bright, harsh light. Do not use intense mercury vapour bulbs in small enclosures.

  • UVB: Use "Forest Strength" UVB (5% or 6%), not desert strength.
  • Substrate: Essential to hold moisture. A mix of sphagnum moss, orchid bark, and soil works well.

2. Diet: The Omnivore

Uniquely, Red-Foots need fruit and animal protein.

  • Greens (70%): Dark leafy greens, weeds.
  • Fruit (20%): Mango, papaya, melon, strawberries.
  • Protein (10%): Once a fortnight, offer a boiled egg, cooked chicken, or moistened earthworms. This prevents hind-leg paralysis.

3. Personality

They are highly intelligent and widely considered the friendliest tortoise species. They rarely hide and will often follow their owners around.
